Frequently Asked Questions

If you are unsure or need clarification please email us at enquiries@greyhound-graphics.co.uk or call The Team on 0117 9759 007.

How to supply images?

  • Do scan logos and text at a minimum 1200dpi for best results. This helps to reduce blurry edges.
  • Do scan pictures at 300dpi (dots per inch), same size or smaller. Your scanning software will help you calculate the output resolution.
  • Do set your digital camera to 300dpi prior to taking pictures.
  • Do not waste time and file size scanning above 300 dpi for pictures.
  • Do not scan a smaller picture, logo or text and enlarge it.
  • Do not use images from the web as they are probably set at 72dpi and are usually not suitable for printing. Images on the web may be protected by copyright.

What file types do we prefer?
We can accept the following file types for your logo, photo or text – .png .jpg or .gif.

What image size do you upload?
Please use the smallest file size possible to increase upload speed.
The larger the file, the longer the upload - be patient!

How do I convert to PDF?

If supplying your own artwork, PDF is by far the preferred route.
Use cutepdfcutepdf:
A Free PDF creating software for PC users. Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard for the secure and reliable distribution and exchange of electronic documents and forms around the world.  CutePDF Writer (formerly CutePDF Printer) is the free version of commercial PDF creation software. CutePDF Writer installs itself as a "printer subsystem". This enables virtually any Windows applications (must be able to print) to create professional quality PDF documents - with just a push of a button!

Having problems with fonts?

  • Ideally convert your text to curves, paths or outlines (which means that you do not need to supply the fonts!)
  • If you are supplying a PDF file make sure that the option to embed all fonts has been selected.
  • We strongly advise against setting text in an application like Adobe Photoshop.

PC or MAC?

We operate from both systems.

Fonts again are a key issue particularly 'cross platform' between MAC and PC. Always try to convert fonts to outline on either format. For the relevant software that we use see Your Own Artwork page.

What does BLEED mean?

This is when your image goes over the edge of the sheet.

Always ensure your image is up to 3mm over the edge of your sheet. Ideally have the text areas at least 5mm in from the edge of your sheet.

Why do colours vary?

CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black)
This is the standard colour model used in printing for full-colour documents, also referred to as four colour printing.

RGB (Red-Green-Blue)
These are the primary colours of light which your computer uses to display on your screen.

Pantone Spot Colours
We use this for spot colour printing, i.e. a specific colours like Reflex Blue or Pantone Orange or PMS (PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®) Blue 300, which will be on all the image.
They will also have a reference 'C' or 'U' after the colour, ie PMS Blue 300U or PMS Blue 300C. This just refer to the material 'Coated' (gloss paper) or 'Uncoated' (letterhead paper).

Pantone colours will usually vary from CMYK which will vary from RGB  as well. We will print using CMYK from RGB images.  Colours will also vary depending which material we print on.

It wasn't meant to be easy to understand!

To make it simple - the colour you see on your computer may vary from the finished print item - this is due to the printing processes used and is unavoidable. We rely on your good will to accept this as fact.
